Offered here is a very special and rare turquoise wolf by Teddy Weahkee (d. 1965). It is small in stature, but large in presence. The wolf is a deep green/blue turquoise with a leather wrapped bundle with mother of pearl arrowhead, heishe and coral bead. It measures 1 1/4\" long and is 3/8\" tall. Originally purchased from Grey Dog Trading. The wolf is in excellent vintage condition. Please feel free to ask questions. Shipping is free and is to the USA only. Paypal accepted. Teddy was born in 1890 & passed away in 1965 and was considered one of the major carvers in the middle decades of the twentieth century. A veteran of World War I, Weahkee attended school in Phoenix and upon returning to Zuni, he participated in the archaeological dig at Hawikuh (1917-1923) where he gained firsthand knowledge of pre-contact Zuni art forms.Weahkee became well-known for a style of fetish carving that closely resembles historic Zuni forms.Beginning in the 1920s he mastered most jewelrytechniques & from the 1920s to the 1950s, he also became proficient at the art of paintingoil on canvas & hide.Most of the carvers of this time period worked for a specific trader but Teddy was almost always an independent artisan. Weahkee also worked as a farmer and a guide and in the 1950s he served as Zuni\'s governor. Very important work of art- heart of any good fetish collection.
