C. S. FORESTER
Illustrated by J. Mazoujian

LONDON: Macdonald. 1956 [published date: 1956]. Rare First edition. 8vo. 7.5\" x 5.5\" inches (LxB). Pp. 319 pages. \"First Published in 1956 stated on the copyright page.\"Half title present at the start.A rare book in the original contemporary publisher\'s pink cloth binding, with blue & yellow lettering on the front cover & spine, the book is in a very very good to near fine condition. Edgeworn Dust Jacket is price clipped on the front flap. C.S. Forester, creator of the beloved Horatio Hornblower series, takes young readers on an exciting adventure to the shores of Tripoli in North Africa. That’s where, more than 200 years ago, the United States was threatened by “pirates” who snatched American merchant ships and imprisoned sailors—and the country’s young, untested navy took on the task of fighting the pirates in their home waters. This true tale features thrilling ocean battles, hand-to-hand combat, and the first landing on foreign soil by the US Marines, and it’s as fresh and relevant today as when it was first published. This novel is sure to delight Forester’s followers and anyone who loves the literature of the sea.C.S. Forester was awarded the 1938 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for both the previous Hornblower novels \'A Ship of the Line\' and \'Flying Colours\'.A classic work. Complete as issued. There are numerous close-up pictures of the contents given below; please click on them for a detailed description (See Scans below). Cecil Scott “C.S.” Forester, born in Cairo in August 1899, was the fifth and last child of George Foster Smith and Sarah Medhurst Troughton. After finishing school at Dulwich College he attended Guy\'s Medical School but failed to finish the course, preferring to write than study. However, it was not until he was aged twenty-seven that he earned enough from his writing to live on. During the Second World War, Forester moved to the United States where he met a young British intelligence officer named Roald Dahl, whom he encouraged to write about his experiences in the RAF. Forester\'s most notable works were the Horatio Hornblower series, which depicted a Royal Navy officer during the Napoleonic era, and The African Queen (filmed in 1951 by John Huston). During World War II, Forester moved to the United States where he worked for the British Information Service and wrote propaganda to encourage the US to join the Allies. He eventually settled in Berkeley, California. While living in Washington, D.C., he met a young British intelligence officer named Roald Dahl in early 1942, whose experiences in the RAF he had heard about, and encouraged him to write about them. According to Dahl\'s autobiographical Lucky Break, Forester asked Dahl about his experiences as a fighter pilot. His novels A Ship of the Line and Flying Colours were jointly awarded the 1938 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction. C.S Forester died in 1966. Writes: General Fiction, Romance, Science Fiction. Author of : Love Lies Dreaming, Marionettes at Home, The Daughter of the Hawk, The Peacemaker.
