A Prefatory Note dtd. 1907 by the Illustrator ARTHUR RACKHAM at the start States:
\"In 1898 Messrs. Dent and Co., first published \'The Ingoldsby Legends,\' with about one hundred illustrations of mine. This book has met with a very satisfactory reception, but the publisher\'s have felt with me that, with the addition of new drawings, a careful overhauling would make it worthy of publication in a more important form, in which greater prominence could be given to the illustrations by better and larger reproductions, including a greater number of illustrations in colour. \"To this end the following has been done: \"The frontispiece and the colored illustration facing page 508 have been specially drawn, and all the other illustrations in colour have been worked on to a considerable extent, and specially coloured for this edition. A few illustrations in the earlier edition have been omitted and in their place have been added those facing page 254 and on pages vi, 25, 37, 316, 320, and 333.\"Many of the pen drawings have been reconsidered and worked on again - those which have been worked on to any great extent being now signed with both dates, 1898 and 1907. Of the rest, reproductions on a larger scale have been made in all but a few cases, and the text has been revised and entirely reset for this edition\'. It has been the desire of the Publisher to present an \"Edition Definitive Deluxe.\" .....it has been reset in fine type, while Mr. ARTHUR RACKHAM has entered heartily into the wild humor & fantasy of this classic. ..........The Color Printing has been done by Ballantyne Press of London.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: Rackham (19 September 1867 – 6 September 1939) was an English book illustrator. Rackham was born in London as one of 12 children. At the age of 18, he worked as a clerk at the Westminster Fire Office and began studying part-time at the Lambeth School of Art. In 1892 he quit his job and started working for The Westminster Budget as a reporter and illustrator. His first book illustrations were published in 1893 in To the Other Side by Thomas Rhodes, but his first serious commission was in 1894 for The Dolly Dialogues, the collectedsketches of Anthony Hope, who later went on to write The Prisoner of Zenda. Book illustrating then became Rackham\'s career for the rest of his life. In 1903 he marriedEdyth Starkie, with whom he had one daughter, Barbara, in 1908. Rackham won a gold medal at theMilan International Exhibition in 1906 and another one at theBarcelona International Exposition in 1912. His works were included in numerous exhibitions, including one at theLouvre in Paris in 1914. Arthur Rackham died 1939 ofcancer in his home invented his own unique technique which resembled photographic reproduction; he would first sketch an outline of his drawing, then lightly block in shapes and details. Afterwards he would add lines in pen and India ink, removing the pencil traces after it had dried. With color pictures, he would then apply multiple washes of color until transparent tints were created. He would also go on to expand the use of silhouette cuts in illustration work.
