They say goodthings come in small packages. Certainly the suppliers, retailers andcollectors of Limoges boxes would agree. Because despite a recent softening inthe market for Limoges boxes -- those tiny, intricately painted and preciselyhinged keepsakes -- they continue to be a good source of revenue.

Limoges boxes are so alluring (who could resist an itty-bitty porcelain mailboxthat holds an even tinier porcelain letter?) that in recent years hundreds ofmerchants, from mail-order houses to warehouse clubs to florists, have gotteninto the act, and dozens of companies have been doing knockoffs.
\"That, for us, caused a true downtrend in the Limoges box business,\"said Mary Morris, vice president of merchandising at Ross-Simons.
Market dynamics indicate that many retailers outside the department andspecialty store channel will ultimately abandon the business because thefinancial investment and dedication to the category are great. But those whoare committed -- and they are many -- are finding new ways to merchandise theboxes.
Morris said increased competition has changed the way Ross-Simons approachesthe business. She now scrutinizes price points and is more selective when itcomes to choosing styles. The store has moved away from the more common shapeslike hearts and hat boxes in search of more innovative looks. \"The moreuniquely shaped, [especially] if they have a `gift\' inside, the better theyperform,\" Morris said.
