THE WIZARD OF OZ Original rare 1939 Movie Herald JUDY GARLANDTHE WIZARD OF OZ Movie Herald was an insert in the elaborate Press Book for the 1939 release of the film. Theater owners could also order a customized quantity of these Heralds to give-away to theater patrons to promote the upcoming release of The Wizard of Oz. There\'s only a few examples of The Wizard of Oz Movie Herald that have been offered for sale. This particular example offered here is different from the others. It has a special imprint naming the theater but also has a promotional mention for Liberty Magazine with the caption “Racketeering at the World’s Fair Revealed in LIBERTY MAGAZINE.” None of the other Heralds have this caption. The release date for The Wizard of Oz is listed on the Herald as Saturday, August 26 though in most locations the release date was Friday, August 25.
What’s also noteworthy is that at the time of The Wizard of Oz film release, Walt Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was a huge hit. So to promote The Wizard of Oz, MGM compared it to Snow White by saying it’s the “Biggest Screen Sensation Since “Snow White.” This 8 1/2” x 5 1/2” The Wizard of Oz Movie Herald folds open to about 20” x 8 1/2” with a very colorful section that packs alot of information on the cast and spotlights highlights from the film, such as The Tornado, Munchkinland, Horse of a Different Color, The Flying Monkeys and The Tree that Throws Apples.
THE WIZARD OF OZ ORIGINAL VINTAGE 1939 MOVIE HERALD has been folded once horizontally. There’s a slight tear at the edge of the fold and just a few tiny tears underneath it. Overall the Herald is in Very Fine/Near Mint condition with no stains, rips, creasing or writing. For a piece this fragile this Herald is in great condition. A rare and wonderful piece of The Wizard of Oz Movie History!
