A rare and original handwritten letter from famed American actress MAGGIE MITCHELL to her good friend Job Carpenter, Treasurer of the Forbes Theatre in Providence, Rhode Island, dated "Monongohela House", Pittsburgh, May 21, 1858. She complains of no one answering her letters and asks about old friends Mr. and Mrs. Forbes who have closed the theatre. She has concluded a "splendid engagement" in Chicago, and is now appearing in a production of "Jessie Brown" in Pittsburgh, and then will be moving on to Columbus, Ohio... 4 pages, 4 1/2" x 7", folds, very good condition with original envelope. An early note has been pinned to the letter stating it was from Maggie Mitchell the actress......MARGARET "MAGGIE" MITCHELL [1832-1918] was one of the great American theatre actresses of the 19th Century, and a favorite performer of President Abraham Lincoln. Ironically, she was openly sympathetic to the Confederate cause and liked to dance on the American flag as a defiant stand in support of the South. She was a good friend of John Wilkes Booth, the future assassin of the President, and often appeared on stage with him. Many believe she was one of his lovers.....Guaranteed original......$4.00 shipping......
