No real significant damage at all on this gorgeous piece, with the exception of very slight toning in the plate margin around the image from where it had previously been matted, but is basically negligible and won’t show or be noticeable once it is matted & framed again. No real creasing at all on the sheet, with the exception of a few light creases in a few outer margin corners—also negligible. This vintage woodblock print will look gorgeous framed up! Simply beautiful!About the Artists: Thomas D. Greenley, Jr. (December 14, 1905 - September 1, 1971) painter, printmaker, muralist, illustrator. Born in Brooklyn, Long Island, New York, the son of Ethel Mead Brush (1881-1932) and Thomas D. Greenley, Sr. (1878-1951). His youth would be spent in Montclair, New Jersey, where his father, a noted industrial chemist (and expert on storage batteries), worked for Thomas A. Edison (1847-1931). In 1916, the whole family traveled to England while his father did work for Vickers, the famous British engineering conglomerate. Unusual for a member of such an esteemed family, Greenley never attended college, and first studied at the school of the National Academy of Design and later at the Art Students League, both located in New York City. At the League he worked under Ernest Fiene (1894-1965), the master graphic artist. It is perhaps under Fiene that Greenley continued to hone his work in printmaking, with a particular focus on woodcuts. During the 1930\'s he worked as an art director for several advertising companies in and around New York City. By 1939, he was living at 8300 Talbot Street in Kew Gardens, Long Island.During the 1940\'s Greenley and his wife, Francisca (née Bolles, 1909-1981), were living and working at least part of the time in Sag Harbor, Long Island. In 1946, they occupied a studio located on St. John Street in the village from which they sold woodcuts and prints. Around 1950, Greenley became a professor of advertising art and design at the Long Island Agricultural and Technical Institute at Farmingdale (now Farmingdale State College). He would occupy his position at the College for more than two decades. In the late 1950\'s, he joined the College\'s library committee where he worked to, among other things, improve their holdings of \"art, sculpture, and painting reproductions.\" Greenley was a regular participant in the many art exhibitions held across the Island which he called home. In 1957, he was selected to serve as one of the judges for the 2nd annual Long Island Amateur Artists Exhibition, which was held at the Suffolk Museum in Stony Brook, Long Island. He also exhibited in New York City at the National Arts Club, where he won the Bruce Stevenson Memorial Award in the annual members exhibition in 1971, not long before his own death. He illustrated several books and many book dust-jackets during his career, including The Golden Warrior by Hope Muntz (1949) and The Slow of Heart by Matthew M. Warren (1959). Unhappy with the quality of lettering books available for his students to study from, he authored a new publication, The Descendants Of Alpha Beta - A Brief Guide To The History And Craft Of Lettering, in 1964. By the 1960\'s, he and his wife were living at 37 Hamilton Avenue in the quaint seaside village of Amityville, Long Island. Thomas D. Greenley died in Amityville, Long Island, at Brunswick General Hospital on Wednesday, September 1, 1971 at the age of 65. He was buried in Long Island National Cemetery in Amityville, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York. In honor of his many years of service, the new library (completed in the early 1970\'s) at the College at Farmingdale was named in his honor. Not long after the dedication a former colleague noted:\"It is fitting that the cultural and intellectual center of our campus is named to honor an artist and scholar—one who gained recognition in his field. It is fitting, too, to the concept of the motto of the State University when we consider that our colleague gained his position in the college without his being a graduate of any college. We celebrate what Farmingdale stood for before the State University was organized, when we recognize Tom Greenley in this fine Library. We should make this known to all who come here. Students will be inspired by the story.\"Thomas D. Greenley\'s works are included in the collection of the Farmingdale State College at Farmingdale, Long Island (which owns several paintings, including a self portrait of the artist); and in many other public and private collections (Source: With permission from AskArt, prior biographical submission by Geoffrey K. Flemming, Director, Southold Historical Society, Southold, NY).
