Behemoth; or an Epitome of the Civil Wars of England. From 1640 to 1660

By Thomas Hobs of Malmsbury (Thomas Hobbes of Malmesbury)

London:

1679 (1st Edition)

Approx Size: 3.75 x 6.25 inches (9.5 x 15.5 cms)

Hardback. 12mo [2], 214 printed pages

Rare pirate edition of Hobbes follow up to Leviathan. Written in 1668 but supressed by King Charles II until Hobbes death in 1679. Several pirated editions were published in 1679 and 1680, despite the London imprint this edition was probably printed on the continent. In response to these editions the first authorised edition was published by William Crooke in 1682. An important contemporary work on the causes of the English Civil War. The early pirated editions are especially scarce. Full speckled calf binding, lacking pastedown endpapers, crease and notes (old shopping list!) in contemporary hand to front free endpaper. Final blank has some notes, names and the date 1701. Browning and foxing to pages, chipping to edges of front free endpaper. Good solid binding.
