Four page autographed letter signed by the legendary baritone to Italian conductor Francesco Spetrino, Barcelona, April 24, 1908
Dear Maestro,
Your letter has brought a painful surprise. In the ten years of my career I always minded my own business and I never tried on never thought of obstructing anyone\'s path. Just to be condidtent with what you are writing about, I inform you that I do not have the pleasure of knowing Mr. Ciacchi and much less I am his confidante. I heard you were hired, as Mancinelli talked about your contract in Lisbon and I showed pleasure, Mancinelli can confirm what I am writing. It is important you understand that the Maestros\' choice is none of my business and nobody has asked my opinion on the matter and if it had happened, I would have been careful not to comment on anyone. Please do not hesitate to let me know who left you with this doubt and who informed you so badly. I absolutely want to clear this matter, because I hold my dignity and I cannot tolerate that some gossip could harm the reputation of a good colleague and friend.
I hope I will receive a letter from you at Genova\'s Post Rerstante, as at the pier Mr. Cicaahi and Mr. Mancinelli will be present, and there we will clarify this circumstance. I shake your hand with affection.

Spetrino (1857-1948) at this time was in charge of the Italian wing at the Vienna Hofoper under Mahler. He was hired at Puccini\'s suggestion there and followed Mahler to the MET. A most interesting letter.
