TWO SMALL MID/LATE 19TH CENTURY ALPHABET SAMPLERS - c.1850 & c.1890:

Two small mid/late 19th century samplers one unfinished. Both pieces are unsigned and dated, very different in style but equally as charming.The first, possibly German or Dutch, is worked in silk on linen and dates to c.1850 or slightly earlier. The linen is finely stitched with rows of alphabet letters underlined with a floral border then surrounded by an entwined border pattern.The linen has has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly grubby with a light crease across the centre. The colours of the silks are good. The sixth photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when it was first stitched. As can also be seen from the photographs, there is some minor damage to the top and bottom edges of the linen and several small areas to the field, the latter having resulted in some stitch loss. I\'ve photographed the sampler on a white background to highlight this but once on a similar coloured backing the damage would be less noticeable.Measures 6\" x 6 3/4 \"
The second sampler, worked in a lustrous thread on gauze, dates to later that the first piece c.1880-1890. The gauze is stitched with rows of alphabet letters and numbers with the bottom section incomplete.The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places and with a line running down the centre, presumably from where it has been folded for many years. The colours of the thread are good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when it was first stitched.Measures 9\" x 8 1/2 \"
