A very rare antique example of a passenger pigeon (Ectopistes migratorius) natural history’s most iconic example of human-caused extinction. Once the most numerous bird in the world with numbers reported at 5 billion individuals, the population crashed by 1900 and the bird became extinct in the wild. The last known individual, “Martha,” died in 1914 in the Cincinnati zoo.
sale prices for specimens in very good condition have reached as much as $25,000 in the recent past (Bonhams 2010). This is a male bird in need of some restoration. There are feather losses to the neck area of the bird and the specimen is missing one leg, which is not visible in the display or photos. The display itself measures 48 inches long and 24 inches tall with a rare convex “bubble dome” extending about 6 inches. The case is late 1800s or early 1900s century by CK Reed, but is not original to the pigeon, which was deaccessioned from a University Museum. There is a chip in the corner of the glass bubble dome, though the missing glass has been retained and will be part of the sale to facilitate the repair. Approximate 10-12 feathers from the neck area will also be included to support additional restoration work.
An extremely rare taxidermy specimen that displays quite well in spite of the condition issues referenced above and a must have item for any serious collector of natural history. Due to the large size and fragility of this piece, buyer will have to arrange for local pickup via uship etc.
