The History of Chalkware
In the nineteenth century, a gift of chocolate was a special
treasure and every small European village had a chocolate shop.
Chocolate was molded in all shapes and sizes. The early molds were hand-hammered over castings created by
individual artisans. The sculptor was either commissioned or,
in some cases, in the direct employ of the chocolate factory who
would provide him with a studio and the wherewithal to pursue
the craft. While it is romantic to envision this lonely artist
laboring over a hot forge, it was not always the case. Some large
factories evolved; Anton Reiche in Dresden, established in 1870
but destroyed in WWII; Letang Fils in Paris who continue to
manufacture molds to this day; and Eppelsheimer & Co. of New
York City. American artists produced some of the most innovative
and whimsical pieces based upon the original European heritage.Casting figurines from molds has been a German tradition since
the late 1800’s. Originally paper mache was pressed into wooden
molds and allowed to dry. Some of these hollow pieces where
then dipped in to plaster, which dried to a smooth, but very
fragile finish. In America, the Pennsylvania Germans substituted
solid plaster for paper mache, and often used chocolate molds
for the forms. Making “chalkware” figures using antique chocolate
molds continues today.

leaving negative response. We always appreciate having the opportunity to rectify any problems with
our items or listings. Thank you in advance. We also appreciate prompt payment (within a week) when

and keep you and happy with our performance. If your payment is made between 4:15 pm Friday
and 4:15 pm (EST) Monday, your item will ship Monday. Thank you.
****Some larger items are subject to a shipping downgrade at our discretion. We do not do this to
save a few bucks but in some cases large items have a $10 to $20 difference in shipping from a priority
rate to parcel select. Most all of these cases are for California, Oregon and Washington state. In these
cases we never ask for more money for shipping but we might have to send it as parcel select.
***All items over $200 in value may or may not require a signature to be received and you will NOT
receive a separate notice of this. Also we reserve the right to not pay for signature confirmation for
lower value items, at our discretion. If you would like to not have to sign for your high value item and
are comfortable with it being on your premises until you can physically receive it then please notify us
before/while paying and we will be happy to send it without signature confirmation. However if the
tracking number on ANY item shows delivery to your provided address, we and the USPS are no longer
liable for the package making it in to your hands.
There will be NO REFUNDS after one week of receiving our items for any other reason but if the
item is defective or misrepresented. We always honor our two week return policy for defective items
or incorrect listings, but one week is more than enough to find out if you like something’s appearance
or if it fits, or found a better price etc. With that said, if you will not actually be home/with the item
for a certain time please contact us so we can propose and arrange an alternate plan. Please ask us
questions or do the research necessary online or in a store to ensure it is the item for you. Brand new
items can be returned for any reason at all within the two weeks but only if they are returned in the
exact condition they were shipped/bought, with return shipping paid by you as posted by the policy.
Occasionally a brand new item that is sealed and a brand new item that is opened but not touched still
have a significant value and you are subject to paying that difference and/or restocking fee. Thanks
