This book is a wonderful - I\'d say essential - thorough movie-by-movie, year-by-year review of the life, career and works of the great movie maker, Alfred Hitchcock.
We call certain life situations: Shakespearean. We also call some of them: Hitchcockian.
It is doubtful whether any other film director has had such a pervasive influence on Western culture.
Many American lives are \"punctuated\" - recalled - by reference to specific Hitchcock movies.
If you doubt this, ask yourself: what was going on in your life when Psycho hit the screens?
There is an oblique-ness, a sideways quality, to the Hitchcock method of telling a story. One wonders exactly what are the feelings - the convictions - even the morals - of the storyteller/director (Hitchcock) of these disturbing tales. Unlike the plots of Charles Dickens, the stories of Hitchcock use coincidence and chance for malevolent, not beneficent, ends. His is a view of life which eschews the sentimental in favor of the absurd. He is the aesthetic child of Samuel Beckett, rather than Thomas out my other items!
