Irving G. Lehman Mid-Century Modern Abstract Expressionist Mixed Media Painting

\"The Beach\"

New York Russian-American WPA Artist Oil

LEHMAN, Irving George (Russian/American, 1900-1983): \"The Beach\", circa 1948-1956, oil w/ mixed media/board,13 7/8 x 37 3/4inches (14 3/4 x 38 3/4x1 1/8 inches framed), signed in paint script \"Lehman\" lower left, period artist\'s label with his LaSalle St NY27 pre-ZipCode address label verso. Original artist painted frame molding.

Provenance:

This work was acquired from an heir of one of Lehman\'s relatives who lived and worked in the Greater New York area.

PLEASE SEE EXTENSIVE BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION BELOW

Condition:

NOTE: Photo lens is focused in middle - sides have same detail but are slightly out of focus in images. Pigment generally quite sound but dusty. Black inner border motif pigment has craquelure showing through to white underlying primer in several areas that does not distract from overall gestural quality of composition and may be original. There is an old finishing nail lying flat at a diagonal slightly embedded in pigment surface that may be either part of the composition or perhaps adhered around time of creation when composition was still wet - looks as though it will pop off easily but we didn\'t attempt it (see detail pic). Frame is weathered, worn, stained and separated but presents as a handsome shabby style décor patina. Central rear vertical frame support has a bracket missing a nail - frame molding is a bit loose and will bow - by re-nailing the bracket and tightening the corner the frame should be square, tight and sturdy again. Amesomely painterly.
