This is a superb boxed set. One volume is an excellent biography of May Gibbs.
May Gibbs: Mother of the GumnutsMaureen Walsh\'s book presents in detail, with excellent illustrations, the life and work of May Gibbs, an Australian author-artist who worked in the 1920s to 1950s, and is, arguably, one of the greatest children\'s author-artists, ever!She might, perhaps, be compared very favourably with Beatrix Potter, or Tove Jansson, the Moomin author-artist. Or, as a North American example, Robert Lawson, with illustrated children\'s fantasy novels such as \"Rabbit Hill\".Born in Britain, Gibbs came to Australia as a young child before 1900, and quickly acclimatised.Hoping to become a professional artist and illustrator, she began to work in commercial art and journalism. (Robert Holden and Jane Brummitt\'s more recent book about Gibbs is an excellent addition, for these early years, to Walsh\'s otherwise satisfyingly comprehensive biography.)During World War I Gibbs invented pixie-like kewpie-like fantasy creatures based on the appearance of gumnuts (the flowers and seed cases of eucalypts) and Australian blossoms.Think \"Flower Fairies\" and you\'re nearly there, but Australian, AND, crucially, alive in a bush world of wild and often hilarious and breath-taking adventure, albeit for children younger than those who can read or hear and enjoy \"The Hobbit\".
Anyone who has read, and enjoyed one of Gibbs full-length illustrated novels (not the single-volume, short extracts and retellings that are also available), especially \"The Complete Adventures of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie\" -- her first masterpiece -- will enjoy learning about Gibbs\' long and fascinating life, especially in an era of early womens\' lib and Votes for Women!
The other is a marvellous collection of some of Gibbs\' best children\'s books, including \"Snugglepot and Cuddlepie\" (complete! her first and perhaps her best!), and \"Scotty in Gumnut Land\" (another contender for \"best\"!!), and some others!The minor complaint about this volume is that, to fit in more stories, the original layout, often with a picture on each page, and with occasional whole-page pictures and color-plates, is not (NOT) retained, although many of the original pictures do remain.But the benefit is getting so many of the stories!!
