THE MISTICK KREWE: CHRONICLES OF COMUS AND HIS KIN

By: Young, Perry

Published by Carnival Press, New Orleans (1931). First Edition.

A scarce book about Mardi Gras history, in Very Good (VG) condition.

Purchased book at Estate sale in Mobile AL

This book is a highly-regarded history of the Mistick Krewe of Comus, Carnival, and Mardi Gras in New Orleans in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It is sometimes referred to as “The Bible” of Mardi Gras history.

From the Preface:

“Carnival is a butterfly of winter whose last mad flight of Mardi Gras forever ends his glory. Another season is the glory of another butterfly, and the tattered, scattered fragments of rainbow wings are in turn the record of his day.”

The book’s central theme is the Formation of the Mistick Krewe of Comus, the oldest continuous organization of New Orleans Mardi Gras festivities, in 1856. Prior to the advent of Comus, Carnival celebrations in New Orleans were mostly confined to the Roman Catholic Creole community, and parades were irregular and often very informally organized. Comus was organized by (largely Protestant) Anglo-Americans.

This is a SCARCE collectible book in collectible condition. On the cover is a painted mask in relief. The book’s overall condition is Very Good (VG). There is very moderate wear at the top and bottom of the spine. The front endpapers have an inscription- Arlene Martin.Pages are lightly tanned, particularly at edges. All 30 color plates are intact. 268 pages. Approximately 10” x 7”. There is no dustjacket and to the best of my knowledge the book was not issued with one.

Please refer to all the attached photographs. They show the condition of the covers, the top and bottom of the spine, the writing on the front endpapers, and representative quality and condition of the color plates.
