The Official Mardi Gras Program, New Orleans, Louisiana, February, 1947, published by L. R. Philbrook.  Not only is this 80 page booklet filled with information about the 1947 Mardi Gras including the big events, balls, parade routes, schedules, etc., it also includes extensive information on the history of Mardi Gras, in general. Loaded with photos, some color-plated, this booklet gives a history of Mardi Gras.  Included is the origin and history of the Mardi Gras celebration, itself, along with the names of kings and queens since 1872 (allegedly \"some of the city\'s greatest leaders and social elite\"); the origins of parades, in general; the history of New Orleans; the history of WOMEN in the parades (apparently women were not allowed to participate in the parades until 1946); carnival organizations and brief histories of each; and \"Odd Tales\" of former Mardi Gras celebrations which are written as if you\'re getting the inside scoop on some of the goings-on. In addition, there is a walking tour outlined in this booklet with directions and addresses identifying significant historical sites with identification and a brief history of those locationsfollowed by historical information on \"old\" New Orleans. There is also a wonderful section called \"Nites of Splendor\" which focuses on the carnival\'s masquerade  balls that occur in conjunction with Mardi Gras. This section includes history, descriptions, protocol, and social significance of these events. Also, there is an interesting chapter entitled \"King of the Zulus\" in which the history of the role of the African-Americans in carnival celebrations is described. The back cover includes an aerial view of a crowded stadium with the words, \"Sugar Bowl\" spelled out on the field by lines of people. Loads of photos of parade floats, people in costume, historical photos of former kings and queens, and more. This is a great, collectible book in NEAR FINE/FINE condition. The binding is stapled and tight. Pages are clean and images are bright.
