Christmas ornament honors the administration of HerbertHoover, who served as the thirty-first president of the United States from 1929to 1933. It is inspired by the fire trucks that responded to the 1929 ChristmasEve fire at the White House and the toy engines presented to children by the Hooversthe following Christmas. The ornament is crafted from shiny brass plated withnickel and 24-karat gold, and the engine carries a Christmas tree for deliveryto the White House.

Christmas cheer when traditional festivitiesgot underway. President and Mrs. Herbert Hoover were entertaining his staff andtheir children at the party while the Marine Band played carols. The dramabegan when Chief Usher Ike Hoover whispered to the president, “The executiveoffice is on fire!” President Hoover rose from the dinner table and asked themen to follow him to the West Wing. The men proceeded to rescue as many of thepresident’s papers as time allowed, while First Lady Lou Hoover, informed ofthe blaze, calmly supervised the party.

Christmasornament honors the administration of Calvin Coolidge, who served as thethirtieth president of the United States from 1923 to 1929. A depiction of thefirst National Christmas tree crafted from shiny brass plated with nickel and24k gold is illuminated from within and hung with ornaments representing theevents of Coolidge’s unique life and presidency.

Christmas Eve 1923,President Coolidge pressed a button and lighted strings of more than 2,500electric bulbs on the National Christmas Tree, a 60-foot tall fir from hisnative Vermont, on the Ellipse. More than 6,000 people then arrived on theWhite House grounds at the Coolidges’ invitation to sing Christmas carols andenjoy the music of the U.S. Marine Band. President Coolidge became the firstchief executive to preside over a public celebration of the Christmasholidays.

As ayoung boy, Harding dreamed of being a locomotive engineer—a wish that was tocome true for 51 minutes when as president, he took over the controls on theAlaskan railroad during the “Voyage of Understanding,” his famoustranscontinental speaking and sightseeing tour. The Presidential Special, thetrain that carried President Harding west at the outset of his ambitious voyageand that would tragically carry his casket back east following his suddendeath, just two months later, is the inspiration for our 2014 ornament.Decorated with gold tones and enamel finishes, the 33rd annual White HouseChristmas Ornament is our first ornament to be comprised of two pieces, whichcan be hung as two separate ornaments or linked together. The locomotive is adetailed miniature replica of one of several steam-powered locomotives thatpulled the Presidential Special; it is attached to the coal car that held itsfuel. The other miniature car is the Superb, the president’s privateheavyweight Pullman car. The last car on the Special, the Superb was outfittedwith a public address system. President Harding made appearances and deliveredspeeches at stops across the country from a platform at the back of the car.The last known photograph of President Harding is an image of him on the Superbshortly before his death in a San Francisco hotel on August 2, 1923. On August3, President Harding’s casket was placed on board the Superb and began a returntrip to Washington, D.C., during which an estimated 3 million people paid theirlast respects
