THEODORE ROOSEVELT (1858-1919).Roosevelt was the Twenty-Sixth President.

WILLIAM HENRY HUNT (1857-1949).Hunt was a prominent lawyer and judge. Throughout his career as aFederal judge, Hunt served at various times in the United States District Courtin Montana, the United States Court of Customs Appeals, the United StatesCommerce Court, and the United States Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit (SanFrancisco). He later left judiciary work for private law practice.

A typed letter signed “Theodore Roosevelt” as President.The letter is on “The White House”letterhead and is addressed to Judge Hunt as United States District Judge inHelena, Montana. Roosevelt commends Hunton his fairness, impartiality, and responsibility as a Federal judge. Roosevelthad been responsible for Hunt’s appointment as an United States District Judgetwo years prior. “My dear Judge Hunt: Itwas a great pleasure to hear from you, and my dear fellow, I can notsufficiently congratulate the country upon your admirable services as judge. Itis not every federal judge who shows your absolute impartiality, yourfearlessness, and at the same time your grasp of the fact that a judge, underthe federal Constitution, often has not only judicial but constructive work todo. I hope you will be in Washington this winter. There are many, many things Iwant to talk over with you. Faithfully yours, Theodore Roosevelt”. The letter is in fine condition with verylight toning and a horizontal mailing fold.
