Height - 5.5\" / Diameter - 11\" DESCRIPTION:

Rare signed crystalline - glazed art pottery vase by well-known American potter, Thomas Gotham (1872 - 1941).

This vase has a uniquely shaped porcelain body described as shape No. 9 in the 1920\'s West Coast Porcelain catalog.
(The catalog is pictured in the article about Gotham in the Journal of The American Art Pottery Association - July - August, 2008, see photos below).

All pottery byThomas Gotham is very rare, but there are only a few examples of this shape known to exist.

The vase is signed on bottom with Gotham\'s printed - stamped (under the glaze) monogram \"TG\".
Signed examples of his work are very rare.

The shape was designed by Gotham and the crystalline glaze formulation and actual glazing was executed by him
while working at West Coast Porcelain Manufacturers of Millbrae, California
(where \'California Porcelain\' designed by Bragdon and Thomas of \'California Faience\' was made).

This piece is a museum quality piece of American art pottery.AGE:

Excellent condition with no damage or restorations.HISTORY:

Thomas Gotham was born in Stafford, England in 1872. He came from a long line of Staffordshire potters. In 1887 he came to America and worked as a potter in Trenton, New Jersey. In 1898 he moved to East Liverpool, Ohio. He then married and moved to California, back to New Jersey, and by 1920 back to Los Angeles. By 1923 be was living in Burlingame and working for the West Coast Porcelain Manufacturers of Millbrae where he worked until about 1929. Thomas Gotham passed away in San Jose, California in 1941.
