Thomas Jonathan “Stonewall”Jackson (1824-1863) was the best known Confederate general after Robert E.Lee. He was born in Virginia andeducated at West Point. After fightingin the Mexican-American war, he taught at the Virginia Military Institutebeginning in 1851. Joining theConfederate Army, he commanded a brigade as Brigadier General at the FirstBattle of Bull Run, during which, became of his courage and tenacity, he wascompared to a “stone wall,” leading to his nickname. As Major General, he served in the Seven DaysBattles, the Second Battle of Bull Run, Antietam, and Fredericksburg. At the Battle of Chancellorsville on May 2,1863 he was accidentally shot by pickets, dying of complications eight dayslater. Jackson is considered by manymilitary historians to be one of the most gifted tactical commanders in U.S.history. His death was a severe setbackfor the Confederacy. Because of hisfame, early death, and martyrdom, his autograph is one of the rarest of theCivil War. This is an endorsement cutfrom a document: Hd. Qrs. V.
