Thor Heyerdahl personally autographed our Kon-Tiki book for in March of 1966, at the University of Kansas. Picture of Mr. Heyerdahl was taken with a Polaroid camera during the lecture in the Anthropology Department Lecture Hall. This autograph was obtained after that lecture. Thor Heyerdahl\'s sweeping signature and picture are affixed to the title page of this hardcover book. The book, by itself, has been treasured but it has served as the perfect container for this highly valued signature of Thor Heyerdahl, which has remained in our possession since that date.
Thor Heyerdahl (1914 - 2002) was a Norwegian ethnographer who explored the archaeology of the Pacific. Most of his life after college was spent in anthropological research, with time out for military service in world War II. He fought with the Free Norwegian Forces in World War II, and was decorated for his bravery.
In 1947, he embarked on his legendary Kon-Tiki expedition from Peru to Polynesia, traveling over 4,000 miles on a small balsa raft. The expedition proved that it was possible for such a tremendous journey to be made and affirmed Heyerdahl\'s belief that this is how the string of islands across the Pacific Ocean came to be populated millennia ago. His epic journey was filmed, winning Heyerdahl an Oscar for Best Documentary, and turned into a book selling 60 million copies worldwide.
Kon-Tiki was originally published in Norway in 1948. Rejected at first by a number of leading American publishers, it became an overwhelming success when finally issued in 1950. This particular hardcover Kon-Tiki book which is offered today was included in a set by International Collectors Library and purchased in 1961. While the pages of the book, are in very good condition, and the cover--front and back--is as well, the covering on the spine has become brittle with age and has partially separated from the spine. We have glued it back together as well as possible; however, it still wants to separate. The spine is sturdy and book is solid. No loose pages, no tears or bends or writing on pages, but some yellowing. There is, however, the book owner\'s name inside, which was covered by a label on which Thor Heyerdahl signed his autograph. Plus a white label on the back of said page to conceal the owners name which was visible from the other side. Please note that you can see a line--which was a part of the owner\'s name-- under the label on which Mr. Heyerdahl signed. But, it in no way comprises the signature which is the only writing on the label.
In addition to the Autograph, Picture and Book, the March 18, 1966 original newspaper article from the Daily Kansan, Lawrence, Kansas, recapping his lecture on that day, will also be included, along with a photocopy of the article.. Also included will be theInternational Collectors Library 4-page presentation pamphlet which was included with the book at time of purchase..
