A Reproduction of a 19thCentury Russian Icon.
The “Oklad,” or metal covering, is a copper-gilt galvanic reproduction enhanced with enamel of an original 19thCentury Russian icon covering. The copper-gilt is shading variously to enhance the patina of the icon giving the look and feel of an original antique icon. This “oklad” is a repousse covering which leaves only the faces, hands and feet visible. “Oklads,” such as this, while originating in 13thcentury Byzantium were widely accepted by the 15thCentury in Russia. Like many icons of this period, only the exposed portions of this icon are hand painted. The corner pieces, centered with raised enamel rosettes on geometric mounts, enhance the boarder chased scrolling foliage.
The decorative nimbuses (Helios) are decorated with traditional Pan-Slavic colors of turquoise, white and blue. Enameled foliage also decorates the nimbuses.
