About Tiffany Studios Desk Sets:

The majority of Tiffany\'s metalware was made of bronze for casting. Each piece was hand worked by chasing or etching and then plated or patinated for the required finish. Most items could be obtained in a gold, brown or antiqued green finish, which was achieved by placing the object in a chemical bath to accelerate the effect of ageing. In all, Tiffany studios produced more than 15 different desk set patterns. This ninth century pattern is one of the more desirable and difficult to find.

About the Ninth Century Pattern:

With its bands of carved ornament and fields of deeply cut strap work, this set is one of the most elaborate. Small animals are introduced in the design as substitutes for the Ninth Century grotesque forms which are usually puzzling and unattractive. The set is finished in gold and mounted with jewels.
