A magnificent bowlfrom the San Juan Pueblo crafted by Tomasita Montoya, probably from the 1940s.This pottery is for the serious collector of quality Native American pottery.The San Juan bowl is hand-coiled, handcarved, outdoor fired and signed,Tomasita Montoya (1899-1978). This master potter’s work can be found in manycollections and galleries such as the Heard Museum, the University of KansasMuseum, among many others. She is referenced in numerous publications such as Southwestern Pottery Anasazi to Zuni byHayes and Blom, among many others. Tomasita is one of the original sevenpotters from the 1930s who was part of the San Juan Revival. The bowl has abeautiful stone polished finish around the rim and bottom. The bowl is deeplycarved; the design work is exemplary. The bowl is in very good condition, nocracks, fractures, chips, or repairs. It is approximately 4.75 inches wide,3.25 inches tall, with a 3.75 mouth opening. It displays well and makes astunning impression; quite substantial, quite heavy. For your information, the San Juan Pueblo has become OhkayOwingeh (pronounced O-keho-WEENG-eh) that translates to “Place of the Strong People”. “Google” Tomasita Montoya to see theasking prices for her pottery.
