Traditional prestige Axe of the BAKOTA, MAHONGWE tribe from Gabon. The axe has two faces. On one side a traditional reliquary figure, on the otherside a face with in the mouth the blade of the axe in iron. The faces and the rest of the handle is partly covered with brass sheets which are finely hammered. Very nice yellow, reddish patina.
The KOTA people revere their ancestors through these BWETE images. In this culture, brass stands for sustainability and strength.
