Two very large, very old Wayang Kulit puppets. Shadow theater is an ancient art and, in Indonesia, the plays retelling the earliest mythologies are an important part of the tradition. I obtained these at an estate sale of an artist. He had, over the years, acquired collections from other artists, including those of one who had lived in Bali between 1895 and 1908. He brought back a number of artifacts, including these puppets. I do not know how old they were at the time of purchase in the late 19th or early 20th century..Made in the traditional manner from water buffalo hide and bone supports, with wooden sticks and natural dyes, these are works of art. In one picture, you can see that the character\'s jaw has been anchored to a bone to act as a spring. The desirability of Kulit is based, not only on age, but on the quality of the paint and the punchwork. I tried to show both in the photographs. I do not think you will find any of higher quality for sale anywhere. These are just wonderful!
