Two matching mid 1700s Henry Bayley Georgian crested sterling silver salt scoops:
$84.99

These are the final two of five mid 1700s Georgian sterling silver salt scoops we have listed this week - this is a rare matching pair of crested scoops by the London silversmith Henry Bayley. They are each marked twice on the back of their handle with a cursive H*B maker\'s mark. This mark was unregistered but recorded on a 1759 chamber candlestick by London silversmith Henry Bayley (see page 256 of Grimwade\'s London Goldsmiths 1697-1837). They each also have the same striking crest at the top of their handles (a two headed mythological dragon bird on top of the globe) - I do not know the significance of this crest or the family relationship with it. The scoops are 3.75 inches long and in very good condition for their age and functional use. The bowl of one scoop probably had a split repaired in the distant past. Please view the closeup pictures and judge for yourself (the scoops have not been professionally polished). These little 250 year old scoops have seldom survived to the present day - to find a matching pair like this is a great rarity.
