HISTORY OF THE PROOF COINAGE:
Proof coins are made from specially polished dies giving them more defined detail, sharper rims and a mirror finish. The dies used for making modern day proofs are treated with special chemicals to make certain parts of the details take on a frosted appearance and polished fields taking on a mirror finish. The term \"PROOF\' refers to the process in which the coins are made and not the condition of the coin. Most proof coins are double struck. This does not result in doubling that is readily observable, but does result in the dies details being fully struck. The U.S. had largely stopped making proof coins in 1916, although a few later specimens exist. In 1936, they began producing them again. Today they are of the most collectibles coins on the market and are ever increasing in all values of investments.
