**PLEASE NOTE, I ORIGINALLY HAD THIS SWORD LISTED AS A \"U.S. MODEL 1860 LIGHT CAVALRY SWORD\", BUT I WAS INFORMED BY A VIEWER THAT THIS SWORD MAY BE A \"U.S. MODEL 1872 SWORD\".
I think this is a U.S. MODEL 1872 CAVALRY SWORD OR SABER AND I THINK THIS MODEL OR PATTERN WAS USED ALL THE WAY UP AND INTO THE EARLY 1900\'S. This looks like some type of presentation sword, it has engraving on both side of the blade part way down from the handle. One side has the letters \"U.S.\" and the other side has a name that looks like \"H. A. NOLTE\", I am not sure of the name, it is done in old style English script. The maker of this sword is \"O. L. ROSENKRANS & THATCHER Co. MILWAUKEE WIS\". This sword and scabbard HAVE NOT BEEN CLEANED, WIPED DOWN OR MESSED WITH, they are JUST AS FOUND. The sword and scabbard are dusty, a little dirty and both show some signs of light to moderate rust and rust freckling in places. BOTH THE SWORD AND SCABBARD ARE STRAIGHT, but there is a dent on the right side of the steel scabbard just below the lower hanging ring. There are some more very light dents and dings in the scabbard, but nothing to speak of. The sword shows some rust freckling in places, but it is still quite shiny and looks pretty good overall. The handle has lost all of the leather wrap, but the wire is still in place and looks complete. The brass \"D\" guard shows staining and tarnishing. The handle is loose, but not real loose and the leather washer is still on the blade where it meets the handle. This sword and scabbard will probably clean up, but not much you can do about the leather wrap that is missing. NO MARKINGS VISIBLE OTHER THAN THE NAME OF THE MAKER, THE \"U.S.\" AND \"H. A. NOLTE\" MARKINGS ON THE BLADE. Overall, I would rate this sword as good to good plus for its age and the condition it has been stored in for the past few decades.
