United States Passport 1862 Signed Sec Of State William H. Seward Civil War Era For Sale
An original Civil War era printed and manuscript completed UNITED STATES PASSPORT, issued to Barlow Stevens and dated July 2, 1862. Signed by WILLIAM H. SEWARD, Secretary of State. Includes description of Stevens, with stamp of the United States Legation in London for travel to France and the Continent. As this passport was issued at the height of the Civil War when few were traveling, it would be interesting to find the purpose of travel by Barlow Stevens. Was he on State Department business related to the war? Needs further research....Overall size 12" x 18" [too large for scanner, shown in parts] and folded to 4" x 9", engraved and printed on fine parchment-type paper, very good condition with some separation at folds easily mended with archival tape....WILLIAM H. SEWARD [1801-1872] was a founding member of the Republican Party, a candidate for President, Governor of New York, Secretary of State during the administrations of Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson, and purchaser of Alaska.
