US CIVIL WAR DRAFT EXEMPTION BY PURCHASE OF A SUBSTITUTE, LETTER & ENVELOPE:
$45.00

This is a fascinating document from the Civil War. It is a letter granting exemption from the draft to John H. Bradbury, of Cambridge, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. It states that for the payment of a substitute\'s fee of $750.00, that he is exempt from the draft for three years. The document is in exceptionally nice condition. It was folded originally, but remains quite sturdy. The envelope was torn open at the time, but is otherwise extremely nice. The document is date 11 July, 1864, and the address of the recipient was 18 Franklin Street, Boston. It appears to have never had a stamp.
I was aware that wealthy men could purchase a substitute, but this is the only period document I have seen that confirms it! This is an amazing primary source document. It is perhaps ironic that there is a man of the same name who was a Medal of Honor winner with the Pennsylvania Bucktails. This is clearly NOT the same man! There is a clerk listed at Harvard of that name, and I suspect that this is he.
