ABOUTTHE M-1965 FIELD JACKET:

As the Vietnam Warprogressed, the US Military realized a need for improved outerwear. Soldiers in Vietnam experienced hot days andcold nights. The temperature swings ofSoutheast Asia meant ground troops needed a jacket that could allow air in whenopened, but insulate enough to keep them warm on cold nights and during themonsoons of the rainy season. The M-65was developed to solve these issues. Thenew Field Jacket maintained the best features of the M38 & the M51including: windproof cotton construction, four front pockets, and drawstringwaist. Some of the improvements in the M65are: the hood rolls into the collar; secured into place or hidden away by a zippocket. The warming liner is buttoned in,so it can be removed in the day and replaced at night. While not necessarily onmost M-65\'s today, a brass zipper closed the whole jacket up, and pockets weresecured by snap closures. Hook &Loop or Hook and Pile was also added to the cuffs, in the event someone wantedto roll up their sleeves and secure them.

The M-65 is an extension oftwo legendary predecessors. The first, the World War II-issued M-43 – whichfeatured a first-of-its-kind layering principle, and then the M1951 FieldJacket which is an olive drab cotton outer shell with layers added inside formore warmth.

The U.S. Army entered theKorean War with largely the same uniforms and equipment, subject to minormodifications, as those used in World War II.

Cold weather conditionsencountered in the Korean War led to a number of improved components intendedfor all weather conditions but was particularly aimed to be effective in coldweather, wet or dry. Included in the M51uniform were: Trouser, Shell, Field,Arctic, M-1951 (extreme cold weather), with or without Liner, Trousers, Field,M-1951
