1904 Hospital Corps Bolo made in the first year of production (1904-1914). This knife is a solid example of an iconic edged weapon made in an era when craftsmanship was foremost. These knives were used in Cuba, Puerto Rico, Nicaragua and other places by the Hospital Corps to cut field splints, stretcher poles, clear brush etc. They were also issued to engineers and machine gun crews in WW1 to clear fields of fire and level out gun nests.
The blade is marked 1904 on the reverse and US 786 (serial number out of a total of nearly 39,000) on the obverse. With a total length slightly over 17\" and a 12\" blade, this is a hefty knife. The blade is about 3/8\" thick at the brass crossguard. Although all the model 1904 Bolos were made at Springfield Arsenal, they were not marked SA until 1907. In fact, the first 400 did not even get a serial number. The russet leather scabbard is marked \"Rock Island Arsenal\" and dated 1912, The scabbard is fitted with a krag type belt hook. Other than a drain hole grommet missing from the back of the scabbard, it is without defects just showing 100 years of use.
