US Navy or Marine Corps 1898pattern haversack. Modified. Unit Marked on the back in Originalperiod markings USS Maryland 65. I can only assume that this wouldbe the ACR-8 the Armored Cruiser and not the Battleship which camelater. This haversack has been modified at some time by adding brassloops for the leather straps that would have gone on a M-1878 Blanketbag to make it into a backpack. Only one strap remains. There islots of damage and repairs, etc, one of the studs closing the messkit pocket on the inside has been replaced with a vintage LeviStrauss and Co brass stud. Overall an interesting Navy or MarineCorps haversack that led a long life. Almost like a substitute or asailor made version of the M-1912 pattern blanket bag used by theNavy and Marines in the Vera Cruz landings.
