ULYSSES GRANT, COMMANDING GENERAL OF THE UNITED STATESARMY, LOSES A TWENTY-FIVE-DOLLAR CHECK

ULYSSESS. GRANT(1822-1885). After leading the Union Army to victory in the American Civil War,Grant became the Eighteenth President of the United States.

ALS. 2pgs. May 23, 1868. WashingtonD.C. An autograph letter signed “U.S.Grant” as Commanding General of the U.S. Army. Grant asks for a lostcheck to be reissued. “Dear Sir: Some weeks or so since I receivedyour check for twenty-five dollars and seven cents, bring amount overpaid by mewhen settling my last bill, which I have either mislaid or lost. It is barelypossible that I may have endorsed the check, which was made payable to myorder, so that it can be collected by anyone into whose hands it may fall. Willyou please notice whether the check is returned to you, and, if not, duplicateit. Yours &e, U.S. Grant”. Grantwould become President the following year. The letter is in very good conditionwith some ink bleeding through onto the first page. As this short missiveshows, even the most extraordinary historical figures occasionally made simplemistakes.
