Handed down to my Grand Mother then to my Mother and then to me. I truly hate to have to sell it, but times are tough and I have a mortgage that is late and needs to be paid... and I know that it will bring someone years of pleasure. So that makes it all okay! I have lost everything several times in my life, due to divorce, Hurricanes, and just plain old bad luck. A lot of the items I am selling is because I have to. Not because I want to. Most I purchased when new or they were hand-me-down are family heirlooms from my mom! They do have a lot of sentimental value to me. However, I have recently been blessed to be able to buy my first home/property. Soon after my disabilities became worse forcing me from working a regular job. I have filed and of course been denied for disability and SSI 2 times and have filed for a court hearing. I just got word that it will not happen for another 16 months at least! Meanwhile I am facing medical / medication expenses, as well as your every day bills and my mortgage. I live a quiet inexpensive simple life but things are getting behind and the only way I can see light at the end of the tunnel is to put up for sale the few things that I own that are possibly worth something.One of my main problems is extreme limitations of my hands and arms (Thank goodness for spell check) I lovingly and painstakingly take pictures and type details to each item I sell, it is a time consuming and painful process. But its the only thing I know to do right now! Everything I sell will be going toward my mortgage and basic bills (food, electric, insurance) as well as medical and medication expenses.I appreciate your offer very much. I was going to attempt to clean this item up before I listed it, but was told by several collectors not to. Because I had no clue what I was suppose to use or how to safely clean it I should let the new owner do it. The picture that is bright and clean and shiny is just a sample of what this antique typewriter can look like! There is one piece of felt missing off the bottom of typewriter. I have seen official replacements on !

The company was founded in New York City in 1895. Franz X. Wagner created the first Underwood typewriter for entrepreneur John Thomas Underwood, who founded the Underwood Typewriter Company on the back of Wagner’s designs. The company produced the Underwood No.1 and Underwood No.2 between 1896 and 1900.
The firm merged with Olivetti in 1963 and the Underwood name quickly disappeared from the company’s typewriters, last appearing in Spain in the mid-1980’s.Underwood No. 4 typewriters
The Underwood No. 4 was produced from 1900 to 1931 or 1932, in much smaller numbers than its No. 5 counterpart, which was produced during the same period. The Underwood No. 4 was designed with 76 characters, eight less than the No. 5. It does not have the #1 key.

This Underwood Standard Typewriter was made in 1904. I believed that this is the model 4-D, which includes a lateral paper guide that can be moved along the carriage paper table to enable each paper to feed in exactly the same place. It also includes the ribbon attachment, and a backspace key. I can try to get the serial number for this typewriter if requested.- dating it to 1904. The keys are black, with Shift, Tabular, and Backspace keys. The typewriter also features the pin striping on the front and CONDITION:
This Underwood Standard Typewriter is in very good vintage condition. I believe The typewriter is in working condition, all keys will function as they should with a little love and care and the ribbon in the typewriter may still work, but I‘m sure it needs to be replaced.The typewriter shows a little wear for as old as it is, along with some dust - it could use a good cleaning as you can tell by the pictures, and maybe even new letters. I like the old, gives it more character! The front Underwood decal has rub marks, as shown. One rubber covering on the bottom is missing but can also be easily replaced. While this typewriter was briefly tested and appears to be functional, I am not a typewriter experts and I’m selling this typewriter as is.
