George B. McClellan (1826-1885), a Westpoint graduate,was the most prominent Union general 1861-1862 in command of the Union Army in the Eastern Theater and for a few months the General-in-Chief of the Union armies. He lost the trust of Lincoln (mainly for failing to pursue Lee after the Battle of Antietam)and was relieved of command by Lincoln in November 1862 and saw no further service. His popularity was such that he secured the Democratic Party\'s nomination for President in 1864 but lost to Lincoln. He later served as Governor of New Jersey 1878-1881.
