Unique Fred Harvey Navajo Southwestern Native American Cat\'s Eye Shell Bracelet:
$449.00

Welcome!

A one of a kind bracelet made mid-century in the Fred Harvey Era, sporting beautiful stamp work of textured arrows and textured circles, with a centrally set cat\'s eye opercolum sea shell with the most beautiful colorations of greens, browns and whites. The bracelet was hand pounded and filed of sterling silver, all hand constructed and this is in no way the mass produced light weight machine made work of the commercial Fred Harvey era. No! It\'s a unique, hand made and creative work which reflects some of the best work of that time with hand worked silver, hand stamped elements and the beautiful intact cat\'s eye shell. Native Americans traditionally used shells but would cut and buff them to shaped forms so this piece has a creative and special aura. Typical of the time there is no hallmark, so we don\'t know the artist, but the piece is stamped sterling and it has a nice weight. There\'s flexibility so the gap can be opened to adjust the size, to as large as over 7\" or near to 6\" if your wrist can handle a small gap. Condition is excellent vintage, collectible, wearable.

The Opercolum, shaped like an eye, is created by some snails and protects them when inside the shell, providing a trap door. That function my relate to it having been thought of as protective in various cultures such as the Victorian culture. Victorians believed there was a constant battle between good and evil. They believed you could be cursed for eternity just by the glance of a malevolent eye. To counter such black magic they often wore jewelry made from opercolum. The most desirable Victorian specimens had deep green centers, like that on this bracelet. The centers were surrounded by wide bands that were shades of brown on top and milky white on the bottom. These operculum shells looked very much like the eyes of a cat so they were referred to as cat\'s eyes. The Victorians incorporated these shells in brooches, rings, bracelets and necklaces. The more operculum shells used, the more potent the piece of jewelry\'s power against evil was believed to be. This is the only example I\'ve ever seen in Native American use, but I think it\'s reasonable to apply the protective function to this bracelet, as has been historically the case.

Details:
• Internal Length: 5.5\" Silver alone plus 20/16\" flexible gap = 6-7/16\" total
• 3/4\" at the widest, 1/2\" sides and 5/16\" terminals
• Weighs: 23.3 grams
•  Stone Size: 1\" Diameter
•  Materials: Sterling Silver .925 and so marked, and cat\'s eye opercolum seashell

Highly collectible and just beautiful to wear, a true showpiece, a unique treasure of the sea and of the Native American culture as well. It combines all the familiar Native elements with a new and stunning look. And it is thought to be protective because the snail makes it for its own protection and its appearance of an eye is considered in other cultures to protect against the evil eye.
