Description: Here is sweet attractive Inuit ringed seal carving in green argillite. Unusual in that the seal is carved in a way where it can rest flat or on its side.Highly expressive face. Whisker and mouth detailing, with etched markings on back of the local ringed seals that are fundamental to the Inuit lives for food, heating and clothing. \"Jobie Meeko\" is inscribed in Inuktitut syllabics on the underside along with a carving registration number 460143 on co-op label.Jobie Meeko is a 34 year old Inuit artist from Sanikiluaq known for his contemporary style carvings. Measurements: \" L X \"H x \" W. Weight: approx 475 grams. Condition: This carving is in excellent condition. About the ArtistAt 34, Jobie is a younger Inuit artist, one of the generation that is striding the traditional world and the rapidly changing northern Environment. He has strong connections to the land and has multiple responsibilities in the community. Jobie is a director of the Qikiqtaaluk Wildlife Board. He is credited contributor in the book, “The World in 2050: Four Forces Shaping Civilization\'s Northern Future”.

He is also a Patrol Leader for the area’s Canadian Rangers, a reserve force that provides a visible military (reserve militia) presence in sparsely settled northern, coastal and isolated areas of Canada. The Rangers are considered as the military’s “eyes and ears” of the North.About the Art of SanikiluaqSanikiluaq carvers are known worldwide. The local soapstone artists have been creating quality carvings for 30 years. The same techniques that are used today have been passed down from generation to generation. Soapstone comes from a small quarry that produces only top grade material. The carvings often represent local wildlife and traditional objects that would have been found hundreds of years ago.
