This is an unique dance wand, which can beimmediately identified as the Shango or Sango due to the flat double bladesthunderaxe. Shango was - and in some parts of Africa and the West Indies isstill viewed as the god of thunder. It was/is believed that he had magicalpowers and could control thunder. Around the seventieth century, Shango was thefourth king of the Yoruba people, the Oyo state.

The dance wand is a very important ritualobject favoured by devotees of Shango.

This Oshe, with the double-bladed axe onthe worshipper’s head symbolizing Shango.The wood has been stained with dark wood stain. On the axe blade currie shells has been carved.

During Shango’s annual festival, womenwould sing praise songs (oriki) priests and devotees wave their staffs anddance to the beats played on drums such as the bata drum.
