Walt Disney Art For
WW II Marines!

8 1/4\" x 11\"....72 pages (exclusive of covers)....Vol. XXVI, No. 7....July, 1943....Published by The Leatherneck Association, Inc. (of the U.S. Marines)....© 1943

Already famous for spreading cheer on the home front, The Walt Disney Studio made enormous contributions to America\'s armed forces throughout World War II. In addition to producing a great many instructional films for the US Government, Disney artists created hundreds of character insignia featuring the famous Disney characters, and made them available for free across all branches of service. Among the top Disney personnel assigned to create these inspirational and clever insignias were Disney Legends Hank Porter, Roy Williams and Bill Justice.

Here is an amazing, vintage magazine, The Leatherneck, which was published by and available exclusively to the United States Marine Corps. This July, 1943 issue features a full-cover cover devoted to a terrific Disney bulldog drawing, which is the art belonging to the First Airdrome Battalion, Fleet Marine Training Center, New River, N.C. Apparently, it was unusual for The Leatherneck to have a full color cover, and a message from the editor indicates that this one was produced in a Limited Edition only!

Inside, there is a fantastic double-page spread showing many more of the Disney insignia created for Marine Corps units across many lines of endeavor.

There are great marine and armed forces-oriented articles, lots of illustrations and photos, plus fantastic period advertising throughout the issue. Familiar brand names such as Chesterfield and Old Gold cigarettes, Noxzema and Mennen skin care products, Colgate and Ipana Tooth Paste, Ballantine\'s and Budweiser, and Burma Shave are among the products promoted as \"probably available at your Post Exchange or Ship\'s Service Store.\"

This wonderful wartime collectible, now more than 70 years old, is in terrific condition. No marks or writing anywhere, and only the minimal (and expected) discoloration of the newsprint-type paper section inserted into the otherwise slick magazine pages. The staple binding is intact and strong, and there are no tears anywhere! There is some expected handling, and a couple extremely shallow vintage crease lines, visible only when light crosses the cover (one is vertical center, the other extends from the bulldog\'s hat emblem to approx. an 11:00 position--please see our photos!).

The colorful cover is bright and arresting, and would look beautiful framed! It\'s an artful and inspirational collectible from a pivotal time in American history.
