On Board Str. Continental, Nov. 1st Dear Sister, I received your letter of the 12 of Oct. some days ago. Thought I would not answer until I found out whether we was going to leave Vicksburg or not. Well we [..?..] at last. We left Vicksburg day before yesterday (Sunday). We are ordered to report at Cairo. Where we will go then I don\'t know. I think we are going to our Army Corps in Georgia. For once our Regiment has got on a good boat. It is a fine passenger boat, one of the largest on the river. We are all under cover, and that is a good thing, for it is raining hard. Last night we took on another Regiment at the mouth of White River, the 22nd Ohio Volunteers. Their time is out and they are going home to be mustered out of the service. This boat could take on another Regiment and then not be full. We have just passed Helena and will be in Memphis tonight if nothing happens. Nov. 2nd, 1864 On account [of] a dark misty night, the boat had to run slow and did not get to Memphis until this morning. We stopped there all the forenoon to unload some sugar. We are now on the way again and will soon be to Fort Pillow. The weather is rainy and cold. Nov. 3rd, 64 We are getting along slowly today. Had to stop the boat last night 4 hours on account of the darkness and sand bars. It is still raining. This makes the 4th day it has rained straight. Ahead the river is very low, and there is a good many boats stuck on the sand bars. If we have no bad luck, we will be in Cairo tomorrow morning. Nov. 4th. We are now laying near Island No. 10, unloading a fine new boat that run against a snag last night and sunk with about 4 feet of water over her lower deck. We are taking cattle off her. Poor things, they have been in the water all night and it is pretty cold. About one hundred of them drowned; their heads was tied down. But worst of all, the deck hands was sleeping down in the hold and the boat sunk so quick that 15 of them was drowned. Cairo, Nov. 5th, 64. We arrived here last night and went into camp. How long we are going to stay here I don\'t know. We have orders to be ready to move at any moment. We expect to have to go to Paducah. That place is threatened by Forrest. We may stay there until after Election. It seems good to be in a free State once more, or to use a soldier\'s term, in God\'s land. We had some ice here last night. It is a great change for us after seeing so much hot weather. Have not had any letter from Phebe in some time. Sorry to hear that your winter apples are going to be scarce. Would like to be home to help you eat some of them. I wish they would pay our Regiment off. Then we could buy some fruit and vegetables here cheap. When you write to me, direct your letter to Cairo. If we are not here, it will follow the Regiment. I will write again in a few days, as soon as we get to some stopping place. I think we will stay here till after Election, without they want us very bad at Paducah. Please write soon and let me know the news from home. Excuse this poor letter and lead.
