What a beautiful and unusual Lawrence Saufkie Sterling Silver overlay bolo with inlaid copper leaping 3 point buck. Lawrence and Griselda Saufkie were important to the growth of the Hopi American Indian Overlay jewelry. They traveled the world talking about the Hopi and Hopi jewelry. Lawrence\'s father began this new jewelry style in the 1930\'s. Lawrence was a major proponent of Hopi Overlay. He was an extraordinary silversmith and a mentor to many of today\'s top silversmiths. Hopi jewelry is handmade, the designs are usually made with one continuous cut of a very fine saw blade. That sawed layer of silver is them soldered to an incised sheet of silver below.

This bolo is unusual in that is also has an inlaid copper 3 point buck. This deer was also cut with a very fine blade and is extremely detailed. It measures 1 3/8\" tapering to 7/8\" and is 1 7/8\" long . It is stamped with Saufkie\'s bear and the Hopi symbol on the reverse. This is an early piece, for in later years he added his name \"Saufkie \" and Sterling. The weight of this great and unusual bolo is 16.3 grams.
