Marriage Pocket Watch Movement
A. Lange & Söhne genuine certificate of origin !This is a great opportunity for any and all antique & vintage watch collectors to step up to a rare one of a kind A. Lange & Söhne and find out what the mystique is all about...

PROPERLY SERVICED:A master French watchmaker hasfully serviced on January 22nd 2014the original, high-quality manual wind A. Lange & Söhne historic mechanism, completely disassembling the entire movement and carefully cleaning, oiling, re-assembling, regulating, and timing it. It winds and sets smoothly and is keeping accurate time.

This is a very fine example of a rare A. Lange & Söhne jumbo size stainless steel wrist watch with one of the most beautiful original high-end quality movement manufactured in-house by A. Lange & Söhne in 1903. This massive wrist watch was once converted from pocket watch by a master French watchmaker to give it a new life. With its stunningmarriage casein stainless steel, this one of a kind A. Lange & Söhne wrist watch is an ideal combination of vintage and modern styles.

Amarriage watchis the term used for a new, custom made case that has been professionally hand crafted to house a vintage high grade pocket watch movement for its classic elegance to endure into our modern time.

If you are looking for a timeless heirloom quality watch that look great on your wrist and that you can wear every day, look no further, this is the watch you have been searching for. It winds and runs fine, and when you start winding it, you can tell this is an absolute treasure.

Watches by this Saxon based house have always been of the very highest quality standard and are extremely sought after, but finding genuinely worthwhile examples of these rare high grade mechanisms today is not easy. After over a century, many of surviving movements of the same age will now have at least some changed components. This rare one is original in every detail, and, while it will be relatively expensive as a consequence, will always appreciate in value steadily in the future.

The look of this stunning movement dated from 1903 with its genuine certificate of origin, couldn\'t be more representative of its year of production, and anyone with an eye for both, modern and vintage design, will immediately fall in love with its superb appearance.

DIAL :A complication is a pretty thing, but it certainly doesn’t improve the legibility of a watch’s time display. And since the time of day is the most frequently sought information on a watch’s dial, it makes perfect sense to concentrate on the bare essentials: hours, minutes and perhaps also a subdialfor the seconds hand to show that the watch is still running. Even the presence of a date display can detract from the perfect harmony and clarity of a dial. The beauty of this A. Lange & Söhne resides in his simplicity.

The outstanding ORIGINAL enameldial with Arabic numerals is in very nice conditionwith only a couple of very thin hairlines, and has subsidiary dial for constant seconds.Itsstunning enamel surface is unblemished, free from spotting and dust staining, and it is clear upon close examination that this high grade movement has only ever been stored in a dry, clean Environment. The signature \"A. Lange & Söhne, Glashütte, B/Dresden\" is legible in black. Two pointed and faceted blued Poire corps renflé style hands for the hours and minutes as well as a slender, counterbalanced seconds hand occupy this graceful stage.Hands are original and correct for this model. Tarnished, scruffy hands will always have a negative effect on the overall appearance of a watch, but these are in mint original condition.

It must be stressed that this is a completely original dial. A high percentage of the vintage watches and pocket watches in circulation today have dials that have been stripped down to their bare metal and so-called “restored”, but this one is guaranteed to be authentic. Period dials that are untouched and in this remarkable rare condition are the holy grail for serious collectors. High grade movements with dials like this one always seem expensive at the time when they are purchased, but when explaining this to new collectors, we often draw a parallel to the world of antique coins, where any evidence of polishing will instantly render an item virtually worthless. Restored dials on antique timepieces don’t have quite as negative an impact, but they should be avoided wherever possible.Being aware of this, serious collectors are notoriously dial critical and the majority will refuse to even consider any movement with a sub-standard dial as a potential acquisition.

More than any other aspect, dials show variations in condition that will render a watch undesirable at a stroke. Prone to fading if left in bright sunlight, foxing if exposed to damp air and dust staining, the dial is more vulnerable than even a movement. Those pieces, like this one, with original dials in very nice condition are unusual, hence when they do crop up for sale, they command high price. Even as full time dealers with a large network of contacts, we find it very difficult to source genuine movements with very nice dials in sufficient quantities to satisfy our customers.

MOVEMENT :Professionally serviced on January 22nd 2014- The most compelling reason to buy an antique A. Lange & Söhne marriage watch will always be its beautifully finished movement. There is more to an A. Lange & Söhne watch than technical perfection: each movement must also live up to the highest aesthetic expectations. Every timepiece is endowed with characteristic traditional elements such as the engraved balance cock, screwed gold chatons and untreated German silver plates. When one buys an antique A. Lange & Söhne, a completely uncompromised, genuinely unique, undiluted product of this venerable house is acquired, and many collectors find this factor a very appealing one.

A close look at this movement from all angles with a loupe reveals that this high grade calibre can only be an A. Lange & Söhne. Not only because it bears the elegant A. Lange & Söhne signature and engraved serial number, but also because of its finesse and abundance of fascinating details for which the manufacture is acclaimed.Without any shadow of doubt, antique A. Lange & Söhne mechanisms from this era represent the pinnacle of luxury watch making so far and any collection would be glaringly incomplete without at least one example by this famous house in it.

The three-quarter plate is one of the most important traditional elements of A. Lange & Söhne watches. It was introduced by Ferdinand A. Lange in 1864 and since then has established itself as a characteristic feature of watchmaking in Glashütte. The three-quarter plate accommodates the bearings of the going train. During assembly, it must be accurately positioned over several arbors at the same time, a task which requires a steady hand and a great amount of time and care. But in comparison with conventional configurations based on multiple bridges, this construction adds considerable stability to a movement. Moreover, a three-quarter plate not only allows a reduction of the axial distance tolerances of the wheels, it also makes movements more resistant to soiling, as evidenced by historic pocket watches, like this one.

At A. Lange & Söhne, untreated German silver was traditionally used as an alloy for the production of plates and bridges. It is stronger than brass, the metal customarily selected for such parts, and composed mainly of copper, nickel and zinc. The latter element allows it to oxidise only to a small extent. German silver reacts very slowly when exposed to oxygen in the air. In the course of time, this alloy is coated with a beautiful golden-yellow patina that protects the material against further oxidation, thus eliminating the need for protective electroplating. this is why German silver can remain in its natural, untreated state.

As was the case in Ferdinand A. Lange\'s lifetime, the balance cock of an A. Lange & Söhne watch is still engraved by hand today. This transforms each timepiece crafted by the Saxon manufactory into a unique treasure. The motif of the engraving has always been the personal signature of each artist, the depth of the cut and the curl of the lines that makes each balance cock distinctive and unique. Thus, it is hardly surprising that Lange\'s master engravers can look at a balance cock at a later stage and easely tell which of their colleagues decorated it.

Screwed gold chatons contribute essentially to the beauty of a Lange movement. The combination of gold chatons, ruby-red jewels and blued screws orchestrates seductive accents against the regulator backdrop of the Glashütte ribbing on the plates and bridges. In the old days, screwed gold chatons were used only in the finest mechanical watches. They allowed the replacement of damaged jewels without necessitating changes to the boreholes in the movement plates.

A. Lange & Söhne used blued screws not only because of their high corrosion resistance but also because they enhance the beauty of the movement. For blueing, the steel screws are slowly and cautiously heated (annealed) to about 300°C. This process coats the metal with an ultra-thin layer of magnetite that gives the screws their cornflower-blue hue.

The whiplash precision index adjuster allows the rate of a Lange watch to be regulated with great precision. This device is mounted on the balance cock of the movement and consists of an index pointer, a setscrew and a beautifully polished steel spring whose shape resembles that of a swan\'s neck. The steel spring presses the index pointer laterally against the tiny setscrew, which allows the escapement\'s gain or loss to be corrected in very small increments.

The use of these noble materials not only pays tribute to A. Lange & Söhne\'s quest for perfection, it also stands behind the longevity of the company\'s watches.

The standard of finishing on this movement is breath taking!Watch connoisseurs can identify an A. Lange & Söhne movement at first sight. Each component is decorated with its own specific type of finissage, whether or not it is visible through the glass caseback. No matter how small it might be, each part must comply with rigorous artisanal and aesthetic standards. It takes several months of practice just to perfectly execute a flat polished finish, while in chamfering, great emphasis is placed on assuring that the edges are not only bevelled to the same angle but also to the same width. A special type of finish is reserved for the balance cock: it is engraved with the Lange-style floral pattern that makes each Lange movement unique. Up to two hours of precision work are needed to mirror-polish the surfaces of a whiplash spring, the endpiece of an escape wheel and other parts of the movement. To flat-polish a component, the finisseur presses it into the pith of an elderberry shoot and guides it in figures of eight on films coated with progressively finer diamond powder. This process requires the utmost in concentration. Even a tiny grain of dust between the part and the polishing film, or excessive pressure on the part, can wipe out hours of work in a second. The bevels are also polished entirely by hand. Movement parts made of softer materials are prepolished with progressively smoother rubber tools and then finished with a polishing brush. Harder steel parts are polished with a rotating wooden wheel.

Flawlessly executed engravings add particular charisma to A. Lange & Söhne movements. The traditional floral motif, the smoothness of the burin\'s cut and the even flanks of the incisions create a choreography of light and shadow that tastefully complements the patterned and polished surfaces. For several generations of watchmakers of the Lange family, the engravings of the balance cocks have been based on the same motif: it consists of flower petals that surround the central screw of the cock and a floral pattern that subtly follows the characteristic outlines of the component to which it is applied. But at the same time, every engraving is unique. The depth of the cut and the curl of the lines are like an inimitable fingerprint— a personal signature that sets each individual movement apart from all others.

The condition of the whole movement is almost as new without the slightest degree of corrosion or even dulling anywhere and the A. Lange & Söhne, Glashütte B/ Dresdensignature stand out as it did when new. Very much to the brand’s credit, there has never been a poor A. Lange & Söhne mechanism, this resulting in a simple situation where the buyer can be confident that if it carries the company’s signature, it will be an exceptional piece of micro mechanical engineering.

CROWN : This stunning A. Lange & Söhne pocket watch movement has its correct original winding crown and stem.Notice how even the serrated edges of the winding crown here are crisp and well defined, telling us that this piece has spent most of its life locked in a safe for investment purpose.

CASE :The eye catching solid steelmarriagecase with exquisite round shape and rare movable lugs has an undisputable elegance and is in excellent condition throughout. The whole case has been carefully hand crafted from 316L grade stainless steel, a particularly high grade that offers very high corrosion resistance and protection against marine and hostile industrial atmospheres. 316L is used in the aviation industry where is has traditionally found favour as a basis for propeller shafts. Case measures 52 mm wide not counting the crown. It is built to the finest standards and designed to last a lifetime.Looking at it now as this is written, we would guess that the watch has only been worn on a relatively very small number of occasions.

Case is a three body stainless steel, polished, with rare movable lugs and snap-on mineral glass on the top and bottom. On so many watches, an incorrect case opening tool has been used at some time in the past, leaving scars to the case back that are both unsightly and detrimental to the value of the watch. In this instance, the case back has only ever been opened with the correct tool, and is therefore in excellent condition with no dents or dings.

STRAP :This watch is fitted with a new crocodile type brown band, 22 mm, with A. Lange & Söhne signature, and solid steel buckle with Lange signature. Strap and buckle are in mint condition, having never been worn.

In summary, this is a particularly appealing A. Lange & Söhne extra fine movement that is original in every respect, professionally converted in a big size modern wrist watch that can be wear every day.It would be almost impossible for the lucky winner to ever lose a penny on this watch and if owned for several years, it will produce a tidy profit. Twenty years ago, original high grade A. Lange & Söhne movements from 1900s were already very difficult to find and today, they have virtually dried up entirely. The simple fact of the matter is that, quite understandably, those collectors who do own these kind of very rare original movements don\'t see any reason to part with them in the present rapidly rising market. This particular watch seems to be the perfect piece for anyone specifically looking foran ideal combination of antique and modern stylesfor long term ownership anda strong choice for the buyer looking for a perfectly well preserved A. Lange & Söhne high grade running movement and original dial for investment.

SOME HISTORY...

On December 7, 1845, Adolph Lange set up his own production workshops in Glashutte, near Dresden, laying the foundation of Saxony\'s - and Germany\'s - precision- watchmaking industry. For some years, he had been studying ways of producing high-value timepieces of consistent quality in series, and now was the opportunity to realize his ambitions. He started the enterprise with his brother-in-law, the master watchmaker Adolf Schneider, and 15 apprentices.

During his travels, Adolph Lange had drawn meticulously precise plans for new machine tools in his journal/workbook, and had embarked upon the exact determination of movement parts, gearing calculations and conversion tables between the French ligne and the metric system.

His vision and ideas began to take shape. Soon, a fundamental break with many of the traditional artisan techniques became apparent at Adolph Lange\'s first Glashutte workshops. The introduction of powerful flywheel lathes increased the speed and precision of parts manufacture. His theories on the division of labor encouraged many of his employees over the years to set themselves up in specialist workshops for watch jewels, screws, wheels, mainspring barrels, balance wheels and hands. In this way, Glashutte could become independent from foreign suppliers.

Growing demand for Lange\'s precision pocket watches, coupled with increasing economic prosperity after the foundation of the German empire, meant that Lange\'s first workshops soon became too small. Adolph Lange established new facilities for his workforce that had meanwhile grown to almost 60 employees. The buildings, which they occupied in 1873, became the family compound.

The premises accommodated the typical 19th century business organization of the owner-manager, with the Lange family home and the watch-manufacturing workshops in the same complex. As a unique feature, Adolph Lange built a master clock for the new building. It had a nine-meter pendulum of cedarwood and zinc, which weighed 128 kilos.

The Lange family complex marked the golden age of Lange watchmaking from the end of the Franco-Prussian war in 1871 to the Great Depression. In 1895, a telephone link to the Berlin Observatory was installed to get accurate time signals for a new chronometry workshop that expanded the watchmaking facilities.

It was also during this time that Lange\'s most beautiful pocket watches were produced -- among them, a spectacular Grande Complication repeating pocket watch with split-seconds chronograph, perpetual calendar and moon phase, circa 1908.

The Lange family house was the birthplace of Adolph Lange\'s grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and it was here that Walter Lange spent his childhood and youth. On May 8, 1945, the main production building was demolished in a bombing raid. Shortly after it was rebuilt, the A. Lange Sohne Company was expropriated by the Socialist government and all the buildings seized. Like so many watch companies, the production of high quality wristwatches and pocket watches came to a grinding halt.

The reunification of Germany gave Walter Lange the courage to claim the legacy of a family tradition that he had given up on. On December 7, 1990, 145 years to the day after his great-grandfather Adolph Lange founded the business, he arrived in Glashutte and started a new company, Lange Uhren GmbH.
