This sale is for a VERY FINE200 year Old -Old Sheffield Silver Plate ENTREE DISH.

TheBorder on the dish is heavy and beautifully decorated with flowers- maybeChrysanthemums andShells in the center of aGadroon edge.

This is the by far my personal favorite of the manysilver pieces we have sold or owned.

The condition of the handle, lid and the dish is in my opinion, outstanding, the silver plate is in excellent condition, it does not appear to have been replated because of the crispness of the detail on the border and the lid.

The Dish measures approximately 12 1/2 inches in lengthby 9 1/4 inches in width and to the top of the handle on the lid, 6 1/2 inches in height.

It was common in the day to order any number of matching dishes - I have seen them up to 8 in number. As each dish was hand made and fitted with the lid to base - each piece was numbered so as to match correctly - often over the years the sets are mismatched; however, the base and lid of this set are perfectly fitted with the matching number of \"2\" - the handle is marked \"4\" but fits perfectly.

Beautiful and sturdy, the Entree Dishhas a substantial weight of 2.017 Kg. or 4.71 pounds.

The bottom of the entree dish is engraved \"FRANCES WYNESS MILLER\"and \"MADE IN 1818\".

On the side of the lid there are fancy engraved script initials which Ibelieve are \"FWM\", but it is hard to say for sure.

As was common, in the area where the owners initials were to be placed, the maker would insert a solid silver disk so that the engraving would not cut into copper of theSheffield plate - this set has the cut in disk where the \"FWM\" is, but I cannot make out if there were other cut-insfor the engraving on the bottom - if not, then the silver sheet on the bottom piece must by quite thick as there is nocopper show through in theengraving.

I don\'t now for sure, but is suspect that theraised silver decoration is probably solid silver.

This is a wonderful example of \"Old Sheffield Silver Plate\" and all that much more impressive and RARE in that it is actually dated.

Most Old Sheffield Plate is not marked but a great deal of silverplate is also not marked so lack of any marking is not definitive. Most of what is generally available in the marketplace today is silverplate, but Old Sheffield plated wares are still around. SinceOld Sheffield Plateis made like a sandwich with silver being the bread and copper being the filling, look to the edges for clues. If when you turn over a piece, there is a thread-likesilver protuberanceon the underside of the edge, then it is Old Sheffield Plate(see Figure 4).If it is absolutely smooth, then it is silverplate. If there is a telltaleseamwhere two ends were put together, (often copper is showing through at this seam), then you have Old Sheffield Plate (see Figure 5).
