VERY FINE CALLIGRAPHY ATTRIBUTED TO HAFIZ OSMAN, ONE OF THE GEATEST OTTOMAN CALLIGRAPHERS

A COMPLETE KORAN, BY THE HAND OF HAFIZ OSMAN, WILL EASILY FETCH HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS DOLLARS

Dimensions: 16 cm X 11 cm
Pagination: 430 leaves (860 pages).
Place of Origin: Istanbul.
Date: Undated. Estimated date 1090 Hijri (about three hundred and fifty years old)
Calligraphy: Very high quality Arabic naskhi.

Calligrapher: Unsigned. Out of modesty and/or piety, many Islamic calligraphers did not sign the manuscripts they penned. On the last page of the koran, a previous owner scribbled \'Hafiz Osman, may God forgive him his sins\'.

I have spent many hours comparing this copy of the koran with a similar-size copy by Hafiz Osman (a facsimile of a copy signed by Hafiz Osman in 1093 Hijri, published in Istanbul in 1387 Hijri). The calligraphy in both copies of the koran seems to me to be undoubtedly by the same hand.

Binding: Original binding with gold cartouche and corner pieces. The binding and spine are generally worn and show some damages.

Illumination: Opening double page has a fully illuminated design.
All pages have gold frames and rosettes marking the verses of the holy koran. The margins of many pages have differently-shaped beautifully illuminated medallions marking the divisions of the text.

Condition: The Blank margin of the leaf containing \"surat al-Hmadu\" has small parts missing. \"Sura al-Baqara\" leaf is torn and stuck again as you can see in the picture. The binding is worn and has some damages. The Yaseen sura page and three or four others show some smudging and thumbing. Very Ocasional smudging to small areas of text. Mostly, the quran looks fresh and clean with very fine calligraphy and high quality illumination.
