This is a wonderful find of a very nice, working, hand carved, 8 day cuckoo clock with a rare 3 bird case design that was created in the Black Forest of \"Germany\" about 55 years ago exclusively for \"Montgomery Ward\" by \"Emil Schmeckenbecher,\" one of the finest clock makers from this region of the world! The clock is carved from cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest. It has a remarkable traditional mahogany finish and adorned with seven, large, hand carved grape leaves. There is another carved wooden grape leaf found on thewooden pendulum itself. There is a carved, wooden bird, a cuckoo I suspect, on the lower left side of the case and an equally impressive, carved wooden bird perched to the right side of the lower case. There is a significantly larger, carved wooden bird atop the clock looking as though he\'s ready to fly. The upper carving is a separate piece and secured to the top with the old hook and eye system. The dial has a black backdrop and features raised white Roman numerals to mark the hours and matching fancy hands to pointout the time. The word, \"Germany\" appears in small block letters on the lower part of the dial. The case has a wooden back door and is secured with a metal latch. The back removes easily to allow access to the weight driven, mechanical, 8 day movement produced by \"Regula\" and bearing the Montgomery Ward name. Aweight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled every 8 days or as often as you wish to wind the clock and cuckoo activities. Regula makes the best movements and Emil used them in all of their high end clocks. The tall wooden bellow tubes are intact and the tops look and sound goodtoo! At the bottom of each hour, the small wooden door above the dialopens and a colorful bird stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a nice sounding coiled metal chime inside the case before retreating back inside the clock, closing the door behind him. Thecuckoo bird comes out again at the top of each hour and correctlycuckoos/chimes the current number of hours before going back inside theclock; fascinating! The clock works quite well here, keeps good time, and cuckoos well too. Keep in mind that it is an old clock and we don\'t know the service history so someadjustments or service may be necessary once the clock makes the journey to its newhome. We always advise our clock customers to service their antiqueor vintage clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will turn aclassic like this one into a family heirloom in years to come. I\'velooked the clock over fairly well and can\'t find any missing pieces but did notice an old repair to the upper part of the lower frame; hard to see but it\'s there. I noticed too that the beak on the large bird has a chip but nothing appears to detract at all...I doubt if anything could. It is an impressive clock and equally so in size too measuring about 19\" or so high (not counting theweights or pendulum), about 6 1/2\" at is deepest point, and about 11 1/2\" or so across the top. The clock comescomplete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a carved grape leaf pendulum, and two very heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. This clockwould be a welcome addition to any collection and is certain to please you as well as capture the imagination of any guests in your home, office, or wherever it is that you care to showcase a gorgeous, rare Black Forest timepiece with a wonderful history behind it. offer with confidence; I have no doubt that you will absolutely love this clock!
