This is an excellent find of a very nice, working, large, hand carved, 8 day cuckoo clock with a rare 3 bird case design that was created in the Black Forest of \"Triberg Germany\" about 70 years ago by \"Hubert Herr,\" one of the finest clockmakers in this region of the world! According to Reinhard Herr (Hubert\'s Grandson), the clock is carved from cured and aged Linden wood which has been the choice of fine carvers in the Black Forest since around 1870. The front is adorned with five, large, hand carved grape leaves and another grape leaf is found on thewooden pendulum itself. There is a small, remarkably detailed, carved, wooden bird perched on the lower right side of the case and an equally impressive, large, carved wooden bird atop the clock looking as though he\'s ready to take flight. The top is a separate piece and attached with the old hook and eye system. I don\'t ever recall seeing a case design like this and the carvings are deep, intricate, and wavy; very nice! The wooden dial has a black backdrop and features raised white Roman numerals to mark the hours and matching, fancy hands to pointout the time. There is a hinged wooden door on either side of the case that are secured with a brass metal hasp. Each door opens to allow access to the front of the movement in case any adjustments are necessary from that end. The case has a wooden back door and is secured with a metal latch. The back removes easily to allow access to the weight driven, mechanical, 8 day movement bearing the Hubert Herr name and the Triberg Germany origin. Aweight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled every 8 days or as often as you wish to wind the clock and cuckoo activities. Hubert Herr left nothing to chance and insisted on making his own movements and they\'ve carried on that tradition to this day. The wooden bellow tubes are intact and the tops look and sound goodtoo! At the bottom of each hour, the small wooden door above the dialopens and a colorful wooden bird stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a nice sounding coiled metal chime inside the case before retreating back inside the clock, closing the door behind him. Thecuckoo bird comes out again at the top of each hour and correctlycuckoos/chimes the current number of hours before going back inside theclock; fascinating! The clock works quite well here, cuckoos quite well, and keeps good time too but we don\'t know the service history so someadjustments or service may be necessary once the clock makes the journey to its newhome. We always advise our clock customers to service their antiqueor vintage clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will turn aclassic like this one into a family heirloom in years to come. I\'velooked the clock over fairly well and can\'t find any missing pieces, damage, and just little signs of use. I did find a nicely-done repair on the lower frame and one to the bird on top but these are very hard to see and not at all detracting...I doubt if anything could! It is a very impressive clock and equally so in size too measuring about 14\" or so high (not counting theweights or pendulum), about 6 3/4\" at is deepest point, and about 10 1/2\" across the top. The clock comescomplete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a carved grape leaf pendulum, and two very heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. This clock is gorgeous on display and certain to capture the imagination of any guests in your home, office, or wherever it is that you care to showcase a remarkable, rare, Black Forest timepiece with an outstanding legacy behind it. offer with confidence; I have no doubt that you will absolutely love this clock!
