ABOUT THE ARTIST: It was made by the D.F. Haynes and Son Company.David Haynes was an artist! He established his company in 1881, purchasing the Chesapeake Pottery Company at that time, with the purpose of elevating the quality of products available to the middle class rather than to craft pieces available only to the rich as was the case with European Pottery. Unfortunately, David Haynes was not a good businessman which ultimately led to his financial failure in 1914.David Haynes began using the marking on this set in 1900. Haynes is mentioned on pages 79, 395, and 415 in the book “Chats on old earthenware” by Arthur Hayden.

ABOUT THE POTTERY: Salt glaze is is an exceedingly hard glaze produced bythrowing into the heated kiln common salt, which vaporizes and settles on theware in minute drops, thin and perfectly transparent. The process wasintroduced into England in the latter part of the 17th century, superseding thedull lead glaze before used, and early in the 18th century, Staffordshirebecame the chief center of salt-glazed earthenware. The best pieces of thisware were made from about 1720 to 1760, and during this period decoration inenamel colors over the glaze was introduced. The improvement of the body led tothe disappearance of salt-glaze and the enameled ware gave place totransfer-printing. Some of the pottery made in this country in the early 18thcentury was salt-glazed, and it has been used extensively since. In England, too, some factories are still producing saltglaze ware.

Salt glaze pottery is stoneware with a glaze of glossy, translucent and slightly orange-peel-like texture which was formed by throwingcommon salt into the kiln during the higher temperature part of the firingprocess. Sodium from the salt reacts with silica in the clay body to form aglassy coating of sodium silicate. The glaze may be colorless or may be coloredvarious shades of brown (from iron oxide), blue (from cobalt oxide), or purple(from manganese oxide).
